Getting started

Install Pontia, select the coding agent integrations you use, and initialize the local service.

Requirements

The release installer supports x86_64 and ARM64 Linux and Intel and Apple Silicon macOS 11 or later. Linux lifecycle commands require a running systemd user service manager; macOS uses a per-user LaunchAgent.

The installer requires curl, grep, install, jq, mktemp, mv, openssl, rm, tar, tr, uname, and wc, plus sha256sum on Linux or shasum on macOS. OpenSSL must support Ed25519 verification; on macOS the installer automatically detects Homebrew’s openssl@3 in its standard Intel and Apple Silicon locations.

Install the clients you plan to use before initialization:

  • pi: install the pi CLI and tmux.
  • Codex: install the codex CLI. Automatic Codex startup uses systemd on Linux and a per-user LaunchAgent on macOS.

Install Pontia

Run the signed release installer:

curl -fsSL https://get.pontia.dev/install.sh | sh

The installer places pontia and pontiad in $HOME/.local/bin by default. Make sure that directory is included in your PATH.

Initialize your device

Run the interactive initializer:

pontia init

The initializer lets you:

  1. Select the pi integration, Codex integration, or both.
  2. Generate the local dashboard credential.
  3. Start the Pontia background service.
  4. Sign in and enable remote access, or continue with local access only.

On first initialization, Pontia uses your home directory as the Workspace Browser root. Existing roots are preserved when you run the initializer again.

When setup completes, Pontia opens the appropriate dashboard. If you skip remote access, you can enable it later.

Check the service

pontia status

Use pontia down to stop the service and pontia up to start it again.

Update Pontia

Update pontia and pontiad to the latest signed stable release on Linux or macOS:

pontia update

If the managed service is running, Pontia restarts it and waits for it to become healthy. If replacement or restart fails, Pontia restores the previous binaries and attempts to recover the service.

Next, learn how to enable remote access.
