Updating Pontia
Pontia updates from the signed stable release channel. Check the installed version with:
pontia --version Update the local control plane
Run as the same user that owns the per-user service:
pontia update The updater:
- resolves the running installation directory;
- acquires an update lock;
- downloads the stable release manifest over HTTPS;
- verifies its embedded Ed25519 signature;
- verifies each artifact URL, size, and SHA-256 digest;
- stages replacement
pontiaandpontiadbinaries in the installation directory; - restarts a running managed service and checks health;
- restores the previous binaries and attempts service recovery if replacement or restart fails.
pontia and pontiad must be regular files in the same directory, and the CLI must be running as the installed executable named pontia. A package-manager wrapper or renamed executable cannot self-update.
The Dashboard defaults to the release archive matching the binary version, so a successful update also moves the served Dashboard to that version unless [dashboard].source is overridden.
Install a specific release
The installer accepts a release beginning with v:
curl -fsSL https://get.pontia.dev/install.sh | PONTIA_VERSION=v0.5.2 sh This installs binaries but does not by itself update an existing service definition. Run pontia up afterward when changing installation locations or intentionally installing a specific version. Normal in-product updates follow only the stable channel and do not provide a downgrade command.
Update a self-hosted Edge
Run on the Edge server:
sudo pontia-edge update The Edge updater verifies the same signed release channel, replaces the managed /usr/local/bin/pontia-edge, restarts an active service, verifies that the new process remains stable, and rolls back on failure.
Initialization enables automatic Edge updates. Check or change them with:
sudo pontia-edge auto-update status
sudo pontia-edge auto-update enable
sudo pontia-edge auto-update disable The timer checks hourly with up to ten minutes of random delay. Disabling the timer does not interrupt an update already running.
Before and after updating
Pontia applies bundled local database migrations during normal startup when run_migrations is enabled. Do not copy a newer local database into an older release and assume it is compatible.
After an update, run:
pontia status For an Edge, check systemctl status pontia-edge.service and its Cloud health badge. See Troubleshooting if automatic rollback or service recovery reports an error.
