pi Agent Client

The pi integration connects real, tmux-backed pi sessions to Pontia. You can use the native TUI and the Dashboard with the same underlying conversation.

Requirements

Install these commands before running Pontia initialization:

  • pi
  • tmux

Confirm that they are available to your user:

pi --version
tmux -V

Configure pi’s own model provider credentials separately. Pontia does not supply model credentials.

Install the integration

Select pi when running:

pontia init

The initializer verifies pi --version and runs:

pi install npm:@pontia/pi-client-plugin

The plugin reports native pi lifecycle and conversation facts to pontiad and accepts supported controls from Pontia.

How pi Sessions run

Pontia launches pi inside a managed tmux pane in the selected Workspace. The pane carries the Pontia Session and runtime identities used by Workflow commands and lifecycle reporting.

Do not copy those pane-local identity values into another terminal. Commands such as pontia workflow submit intentionally work only inside the managed pane for the current Workflow Agent Node.

Pontia reads complete conversation history from pi’s native data rather than maintaining a second full transcript. If the native history is unavailable, the Dashboard may still show Pontia’s control state while conversation recovery is limited.

Override the pi command

The default TUI command is pi. To use another executable or wrapper, set it in $PONTIA_HOME/config.toml:

[runtime.pi]
tui_command = "/absolute/path/to/pi"

For a command-scoped override, use PONTIA_PI_TUI_COMMAND. Environment overrides supplied only to pontia init are not persisted into the installed service; put a lasting value in config.toml and restart Pontia.

Diagnose the integration

Pontia’s pi hook log is:

$PONTIA_HOME/state/pi-hook.log

Also verify that pontia status reports a healthy service and that the pi plugin remains installed. See Troubleshooting for service logs and common recovery steps.
